Oriental Box Bellows

Step-by-step building plans for an ancient oriental box bellows - perfect for your blacksmith forge!

Oriental Box Bellows
Since ancient times, blacksmiths have plied their trade pounding raw ore into beautiful, useful objects. In order to do a good job, what a blacksmith needs most is a hot fire. The oriental box bellows, also called a piston bellows or a fukisashi bellows, is a wonderful tool for the job.

This is the same type of forge blower used since ancient times in the Orient to forge specialty items like the samurai swords. This bellows delivers air on both the pull and the push stroke. By delivering more air the forge can be maintained at a consistent high heat. This bellows is both economical and easy to build yourself using our professionally drawn plans. Step-by-step instructions, measured drawings and plenty of photos make the job easy. This building plan includes instructions to build two different sizes of bellows, a full sized version with a 47 inch air chamber as well as a 25% smaller version for smaller forges. This design could also be used any place you need a blower, for ventilation perhaps.

Since it is an ancient design, the Oriental box bellows makes a great addition to your gear if you are a living history interpreter. Period appropriate whether you are involved in the Renaissance Faires or Civil War reenacting. As always we provide technical support by email for all of our building plans.
